Conference of the parties on climate change (COP21) – our commitment

At the COP21 Climate Change Conference in Paris at the end of 2015, the buildings and construction industry plays a more important role than ever.

At the COP21 Climate Change Conference in Paris at the end of 2015, the buildings and construction industry plays a more important role than ever. Through highlighting our Journey to Deep Green™, which has put climate considerations at the heart of our business planning since 2010, we want to show what is already possible.

Conference of Parties on climate change (COP21)

The 21st Conference of Parties on climate change (COP21) organized in Paris in the beginning of December will be crucial to safeguarding next generations from the effects of climate change caused by man-made carbon emissions.

First Buildings Day at COP21

In recognition of the fact that the construction industry is an essential part of the solution to achieve the below 2°C objective, COP21 will host the first Buildings Day. Buildings Day will take place on 3rd December and will launch a Global Building Alliance for Buildings and Construction organizations that commits to:

  • Helping to put the buildings and construction sector on the "below 2°C path"
  • Aligning existing initiatives, commitments and programs to achieve greater scale and increase the pace of efficiency actions
  • Catalyzing stronger collaboration and targeting sectoral and cross-sectoral climate action and solutions for all

Gathering commitments

In preparation for Buildings Day, the Global Building Alliance for Buildings and Construction is gathering commitments from their partners and member organizations. These commitments will help to highlight the potential of the construction sector and promote specific action to achieve greater energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Skanska's Commitment: Our Journey to Deep Green™

Our Journey to Deep Green™ has put climate and resource considerations at the heart of our business planning since 2010. Through our Journey to Deep Green™ we define Green and Deep Green Targets in our business plans. Read  How we define Green.

For example, our commercial development units in Europe are aiming to only develop Green and Deep Green projects by 2020 - with Deep Green making up 20 percent of their project portfolios. Additionally, two of our largest construction units are aiming for a 100 and 80 percent proportion of Green projects in their respective project portfolios by 2020, which includes 15 percent and 5 percent Deep Green projects respectively.

The examples from our business plan show that working with customers and value chain partners should lead to opportunities in all countries to contribute toward the below 2°C objective.
