Danish company introduce new system for recycling packaging

The Danish liquorice manufacturer Lakrids by Bülow has introduced a new system where customers can hand in their empty liquorice buckets in seven local shops in Denmark and in this way support that the packaging is recycled in the best possible way.

In 2019, the company started producing parts of its packaging from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic. The next step is to ensure that the packaging is recycled in the best possible way.

Sustainable packaging

“Our goal is to create a closed system where we recycle all the materials we use in production. Today, the lid is the only element made of new plastic, and we are also working hard to find a more sustainable solution for this,” says Johan Bülow, forunder and creative director in Lakrids by Bülow.

Lakrids by Bülow is the first confectionary producer in the world to make jars made from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic. This switch in materials in the production has had the biggest impact on reducing CO2 emissions.

The global demand for responsible choices and production including packaging is thus starting to have an impact as the switch have enabled the company to reduce emissions from packaging by 40% since 2016.

Green energy

The packaging is not the only climate and environmentally friendly decision from Lakrids by Bülow. Since 2020, their production is running on 100% green energy.

Despite doubling their production output from 2016 to 2020, they have managed to reduce their production related CO2 emissions by 98% in the meantime.
