Packaging has many functions. Traditionally, packaging protects the product, extends its life, presents the product for sale or—in the case of food—suggests a way to prepare the food and allows undamaged transportation of the product to the customer.
Customers have focused more and more on packaging in recent years. There is the obvious pollution problem in the oceans, the less visible (but clearly proven) problems of microplastics and the amount of packaging waste derived from households have all sharpened consumer awareness.
Consumers ask questions like ...
- "What material is the packaging made of?"
- "How will the packaging affect the environment?"
- "Which alternatives are more sustainable?"
Answers that companies may (or may not) give to such questions influence consumer behavior and consumer decision-making. It is understandable that, for ecological reasons, customers want to reduce packaging as much as possible, but still get all the value it provides
