Morgenmøde
Business and Human Rights – Introduction and updates
In today’s interconnected world, the intersection of business and human rights is more critical than ever. The UN Global Compact emphasizes that businesses, regardless of size or sector, have a fundamental responsibility to respect human rights. During this morning meeting (which will take place in English), you will get an introduction to business and human rights, as well as an update on recent policy and other developments.
Business and Human Rights
The idea of human rights is as simple as it is powerful: that people have a right to be treated with dignity. Human rights are inherent in all human beings, whatever their nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language or any other status. Every individual is entitled to enjoy human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.
The Human Rights Principles (Principles 1 and 2) of the UN Global Compact are derived from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We call on companies to respect and support internationally-proclaimed human rights and to ensure they are not complicit in human rights abuses. This requires human rights due diligence, i.e. the process of identifying, assessing and addressing human rights impacts throughout business operations and relationships.
Recent EU policy developments such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive set firmer legal requirements on the human rights due diligence processes of companies.
During this morning meeting, Mathilde Dicalou from the Danish Institute for Human rights and Cathrine Bloch Veiberg, Head of Human Rights and Social Sustainability at the Global Compact Network Denmark, will give an introduction to the topic of human rights and business and share recent developments.
