Last year, BESTSELLER made great strides towards sourcing 100 percent more sustainable cotton, made a significant commitment to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and revealed plans to build its own solar power plant.

BESTSELLER’s 2018 sustainability report is out now and is based on its Fashion FWD sustainability strategy, which was launched in late 2018.

The report is split into four focus areas – Creating FWD, Making FWD, Engaging FWD and Delivering FWD – following the logic of the new strategy, and outlines progress against our new sustainability goals and various sustainability initiatives.

“By working across our entire value chain, we believe that our initiatives and goals will help us transform

the way our products are created, made and consumed. Our North Star, our ultimate ambition, is to bring fashion forward until we are climate positive, fair for all and circular by design. Fashion FWD sets our near-term direction with goals to achieve by 2025 and will serve as a launch pad to propel us towards our North Star. This new report is our first status update, providing insight into the steps we have already taken on this journey and what’s to come,” says Dorthe Scherling Nielsen – Head of BESTSELLER Corporate Affairs.

Key achievements

  • As part of Fashion FWD, BESTSELLER has committed to sourcing 100 percent of its cotton from more sustainable alternatives by 2022. BESTSELLER reached more than 62 percent in 2018.

  • In line with its climate positive ambition, BESTSELLER, in 2018, committed to setting science-based goals on greenhouse gas emissions through the Science-Based Targets initiative, which is run by organisations such as the UN Global Compact. These goals will be finalised by 2020. Science-Based Targets aim to keep global warming below a 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature increase, as set out in the Paris Agreement.
  • In connection with the launch of Invest FWD – BESTSELLER’s new investment platform to accelerate sustainable innovation and solutions for the fashion industry – BESTSELLER and its parent company HEARTLAND announced a partnership with Better Energy in 2018 to build its own solar power plant. The solar power plant will produce the equivalent of BESTSELLER’s entire global energy consumption for owned and operated buildings. This will see BESTSELLER achieve its goal of using 100 percent renewable energy by 2021 for owned and operated buildings. A location for the power plant is yet to be announced.

With BESTSELLER putting Fashion FWD into effect, CEO and owner Anders Holch Povlsen is focused on the task ahead.

“Building on our existing foundations, our Fashion FWD strategy will put sustainable principles at the heart of our company, taking us to the next level. There is a lot of work to be done if we are to reach a more sustainable reality, so it has been encouraging to see how positively our colleagues and business partners have responded since the launch of Fashion FWD. We must all do our part to implement the necessary changes to our business and industry,” says Anders Holch Povlsen.
